  • Living under a Basha in the wilds of Dartmoor (Devon, UK) with no mobile phone signal I found myself focusing on what I feel and needed now. Returning to the “civilised world” I found myself being compelled, yet again to fire up the smart phone and get connected with what I missed. I missed nothing, if fact I missed less than nothing other than that addictive feeling I get when seeking validation from the information superhighway (one for the Clive James fan there).
Within 24 hrs of my return I looked at my right hand and found the phone and fused it self to my being. The choice was made there, I removed the sim card raked out my “dumb phone” and promptly sent my smart phone to mazuma.
That was 10 days ago, I am now utilising some kit allowing me to focus on now and take the world at my pace.  Although, it may not be as compact as our modern friend it certainly has more practical uses when it comes to focusing and truly connecting with the world.
Messenger Bag- home of the simplified kit. Sturdy, versatile, and comfortable to carry.
Note Book and Pen- great to jot down ideas, thoughts and feelings. I use dump lists a lot to empty my head focusing on what need to be done and when. Applications on the Smart phone did not give me this instant access especially if the phone needed charging.
Book- with no social media distraction I can actually focus on reading again. Better than facebooking while coiling off a turd. There is nothing nice about that.
“Dumb Phone”- Only texts and calls- reduced tariff to £7 per month for my needs. Now I find myself connecting more one on one with friends rather than it being on a notice board on social media. I have always said if something is really important someone will call you. If I call them I am treating them with importance.
Hoody (external thermostat)- you never know when it might get nippy. If it is too warm it can go in the bag.
Now when I am out and about I feel more present in where and when I am. My validation now comes when I have a nice chat with the woman in the corner shop or the bloke fixing my car. I live in a world of people, not statuses, avatars and icons.
Don’t misunderstand me I am not against internet to help us connect.  For me this is now done in blocked out sections off my week. Doing this allows me to sort social networks out with individual focus giving the correct importance to the tasks or replies required.
My personal experience has demonstrated that we need to focus our resources and not allow are resources to focus us. There is a lot of info out there but ask do I need it, do I want it and how will it help? A wise man knows when to listen.
