Spending the day on a photo walk with professional documentary photographer Jerome Lorieau was an absolute pleasure.

Meeting Jerome early we discussed his approach to composition and use of light. This simple approach to photography certainly factors in his images that have impact while conveying real stories.

His ability to critique and feed back on my images was gentle and practical helping me take on new photography tools that are centre around real observation. This generated a further understanding of what the professional photography world look for in a image.

Walking the street with Jerome I found that getting a bit closer to subject was something I need to practice, as most of my images had too much empty space in the fore ground. While walking I found the lessons of anticipation and framing the image slowly came into fruition but ,of course, still require practice. Additionally, this must be the first time I really felt able to experiment with shutter speed and aperture giving me more confidence in the technical use of my camera .

Ending the day we reviewed photos over a pint of beer. Again, Jerome’s ability to provide positive feedback really empowered my need to get out and take more shots. Talent for anybody is only 1% the rest us up to them.
